UN-Whitewashing MLK, Jr. 10FEB17
To hear the same quotes from the “I Have a Dream” speech year after year, shooting after shooting, is to feel the color draining from your face and that of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. History has a way of editing itself, compounding down to the most digestable pieces until its a caricature of pop culture. The difficult parts get brushed over, the stains bleached into pristine newness, unrecognizable from its origins. In a wonderful effort to restore our history, an artist named Daniel Rarela had enough with the manipulation of Dr. King’s words and legacy. In commemoration with Dr. King’s birthday this year, he created a series of graphics with quotes you may not have heard, but you definitely need to.
